This is, obviously, a very solid setup for a murder mystery, and the show, to its credit, has a really good instinct for when to drop the next clue, twist, or reveal, which is usually just as attention is beginning to wane. And, as the title implies, one of them is lying about what happened. The hook is that Simon was in the room with four other students – straight-A teacher’s pet Bronwyn (Marianly Tejada), closeted star athlete Cooper (Chibuikem Uche), unfaithful cheerleader mean girl Addy (Annalisa Cochrane), and bad boy drug dealer Nate (Cooper van Grootel). It’s watchable, for sure, but that’s partly on the strength of the case, which finds misanthropic gossipmonger Simon (Mark McKenna) dying of an allergic reaction in detention right before he’s due to disseminate a treasure trove of secrets on his blog, About That. Based on a book by Karen McManus that combined The Breakfast Club with an Agatha Christie locked-room whodunit and a keen sense of how teenagers might act and behave, this eight-episode series, which began as a Peacock original and is now rather mysteriously a Netflix one, manages to replicate the broad strokes of the mystery without transplanting any of the depth. One of Us Is Lying doesn’t break the fourth wall or get particularly meta, but it’s clearly aware of the innumerable other shows just like it.

Some students felt that experience is the best teacher in life. Some students drew connections with teachings from their parents and churches about the importance of doing good and being good, even when others around us are not. However, students differ in the lessons they learned from the book. Students generally agree that the things Ethan did were wrong and that Steinbeck did a good job in showing that happiness in life does not come from doing bad things to get ahead or merely from the acquisition of wealth. The class discussions of this book are always interesting. That’s a scary way to justify one’s behavior. “What are morals? … Is there a check in men, deep in them, that stops or punishes? There doesn’t seem to be,” says Ethan. Steinbeck takes us into the mind of Ethan as he rationalizes what he does. I like the book because it is one of the best novels showing the dilemma people face when tempted to do bad things and the heartache people inevitably feel because of their actions. By the end of the book Ethan has engaged in a number of morally corrupt activities in order to obtain wealth and status. At the beginning of the book Ethan is content and has a reputation for integrity. The story, which takes place in the early 1960s in a fictional East Coast town called New Baytown, is about the moral decline of a man named Ethan. For the past several years I have required students in my applied ethics course to read John Steinbeck’s book, The Winter of Our Discontent. I think it would be easy for readers to write Animal off as an unrealistic representation of men-and there are elements of it that lend me to agree with this assumption-but I would argue that isn’t a fair assessment. While the consistency of disgusting behaviour felt a bit exaggerated when reading in a condensed book of roughly 300 pages, if we were to think through the span of our lives I think our creepy old dude meter would be ticking right up with Joan’s. While to me it felt like that is the only perspective we got, I simply can’t argue with the fact that these people exist and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say most of us are fairly familiar with them in our own lives. The men depicted in this book mostly all fall under the umbrella of “creepy old dude,” with a few exceptions. It is hard to tell whether Taddeo was writing the men this way as an accurate or ironic depiction of stereotypical attributes we are all very familiar with. All of the men in Animal are simply: the worst.
